Dr. Leticia Fernández-Friera

Distinguished cardiologist, the founder of ATRIA Clinic, and the director of the Comprehensive Cardiovascular Disease Center at HM Hospitals.She earned her medical degree from the University of Oviedo and completed her cardiology specialization at the Hospital Marqués de Valdecilla, Santander. Her doctoral thesis on CT in the assessment of acute chest pain was awarded Cum Laude honors by the University of Cantabria.

A dedicated researcher, Dr. Fernández-Friera focuses on women’s cardiovascular health, with her work published in over 100 influential journals such as Nature, JACC, Circulation, and The New England Journal of Medicine.

Following her training in Spain, she pursued further specialization in echocardiography at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and in cardiac CT and MRI at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Fernández-Friera has received prestigious international recognition, including the highest accreditation from the European Society of Cardiology in cardiac MRI and cardiac CT.

Upon her return to Madrid, she co-founded Atria Clinic with Dr. Jorge Solís, aiming to deliver top-notch cardiac care and introduce 3D vascular ultrasound technology to Spain for early detection of common yet serious conditions like stroke, thromboembolic disease, and acute myocardial infarction.

As a passionate advocate for women’s cardiovascular well-being, Dr. Fernández-Friera spearheaded the Corazón de Mujer (Woman’s Heart) movement in Spain, inspired by the American Go Red for Women campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness among the public and healthcare professionals about the poorer outcomes of cardiovascular diseases in women compared to men, addressing a gender health disparity often underestimated due to limited public awareness of the true prevalence of cardiovascular disease in women.
